Dr. Piken is a gastroenterologist who treats all aspects of gastrointestinal and liver disease. He has been recognized as a leader in both treatment and research in both liver disease and inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Education and Training

Dr. Piken attended New York University from 1965 – 1969 where he was placed on the Dean’s list for excellent academics every year. He subsequently went to the State University of New York at Brooklyn on a full scholarship and graduated cum laude. At State University he was president of the Alpha Academic Society and received Michael Malamud Award for outstanding scholar in the medical school in 1973. He went on to perform an internship at Albert Einstein Hospital and Bronx Municipal Hospital in 1974 and did his residency at Albert Einstein Hospital through 1976. Dr. Piken came to Harbor General UCLA in 1976 for his gastroenterology fellowship and subsequently met his future partners Dr. Norman Panitch and Dr. Howard Resin at this institution. From 1978 – 1998 he continued to teach there on a part-time basis as well as participating in South Bay Gastroenterology Medical Group which now includes eight full time physicians.

Practice Location

Torrance Memorial Medical Center and Little Company of Mary Hospital. Dr. Piken has had many professional and hospital affiliations including President of the local and state Gastroenterology Associations, and Assistant Chief of Staff at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, former Chief of Medicine and Director of Medical Education for 5 years. He currently is vice president of South Bay Independent Physicians and has served on their board for 10 years.
